Cloning
In animals, fine, whatever, go for it.
I think messing with genes before we know what the hell we are really
doing is dangerous, but that won't stop people from trying. Also, I think
genetic diversity and "errors" in the gene code are features, not bugs. The
whole genetic structure of life is actually very robust if you don't screw with
it. But we've been screwing with it for years, so...what the heck. Bring it
on. Cloning humans is different. Lots of people think that when you clone
someone, you'll get an exact copy of them. I don't believe that for a moment.
First of all, environment determines everyone. The clone would have to have the
exact same environment, influences, and experiences, down to the
slightest detail, to end up exactly the same. You won't even get someone that
looks exactly the same, let alone acts the same as well. Look at
identical twins sometime. Will we get a successful human clone someday?
Probably. Will it be worth it? I doubt it. What are you going to do? Bring
back Marilyn Monroe and then completely torture the new person by shoving onto
them a life that isn't theirs? Yeah...that's a good idea.
To all those
people with a vision of bringing back loved ones stripped from you early: I
hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're not going to get back your lost
one. It's just not reality. If you had a clone, they'd look the same, but
wouldn't be the same person -- do you really want that? Part of life is death.
It's not always fair, but then again, when has it been? I'm sorry for your
loss, but reversing life won't get you anywhere. Please work through your loss
and move onwards.
